Mercer’s first actuary inducted into CPBI Hall of Fame

Laurence Coward has been inducted into the Canadian Pension & Benefits Institute (CPBI) Hall of Fame.

He was one of two inaugural inductees into the newly established Hall of Fame.

Bill Mercer hired Coward in 1949, making him the first actuary employed by William M. Mercer Ltd.

He became a vice-president at Mercer in 1955 and a senior vice-president in 1968. In 1970, Coward became one of three executive vice-presidents responsible for Mercer’s central region.

He joined the CPBI in 1960 and was awarded a lifetime membership after serving as president of the CPBI from 1963 to 1965.

Coward was also the first chairman of the Pension Commission of Ontario, a founding member and past president of the Canadian Pension Conference (now the CBPI), a past president of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and an advisor to governments on the key pension initiatives of his time.

He passed away in 2004.
