Recently, the Quebec Committee on Public Finance held consultations and offered proposals on the D’Amours report, a government-mandated study that examines Quebec’s retirement system and offers solutions. The proposals of the committee are disappointing, according to a newly released Mercer communiqué.
One of the recommendations the committee made is improving the funding method for the province’s DB plans, which are under significant pressure. Specifically, the committee says that more in-depth studies are needed as far as funding is concerned.
But this measure would be counterproductive, according to Mercer. “It would be surprising if more in-depth analyses were to bring forth additional facts likely to provide better guidance for legislators,” Mercer says in its communiqué. “We would have preferred to see the committee encourage the government to take action.”
The D’Amours report was released in April. Over the summer, the Quebec Committee on Public Finance held consultations about the report.
