Tech helps millennials change financial behaviour

Millennials are spending more time on their mobile devices, and the increased dependency is paying off financially.

According to a BMO Bank of Montreal survey, since millennials began using a financial app, 88% are managing their finances more effectively and know exactly what is going on with their finances at all times.

The survey also reveals the following:

  • 63% now use mobile banking on a weekly basis to check their account balances, and 56% use it to review transactions;
  • 85% have better control over their spending, while 74% are overdrawn on their account less often;
  • 84% are able to make better purchasing decisions while on the go; and
  • 82% pay their bills on time more often.

Tatiana DaCosta, head of online and mobile banking Canada with BMO Financial Group, notes that financial apps are rapidly evolving not only to provide Canadians convenient access to their personal finances but also to represent an alternative and effective money management tool.

The technology issue of Benefits Canada, which comes out next week, will provide more information on innovative tech tools and more.
