People Watch: On the move in September

Here’s a review of people on the move in September.

Mike Brown has joined State Street Global Advisors, Ltd. in a new position as a dedicated senior consultant relations liaison. Prior to this, he served as an in-country investment consultant for 13 years, most recently with Toronto-based James A. Knowles, Inc.

Jan Cornelis de Bruijn has joined Mackenzie Financial as senior vice-president, investment management, and will lead the company’s new global emerging markets team, based in Singapore. He has 22 years of investment experience with significant expertise in building, developing and leading emerging markets investment teams.

TMX Group has selected Lou Eccleston as its next CEO. He will succeed Thomas Kloet, who will retire at the end of October. Eccleston has more than 30 years of extensive experience gained in senior leadership roles in the information services, financial technology and capital market services sectors.

Peter D. Hancock is the new president and CEO of AIG. He previously served as CEO of the company’s property casualty division. Hancock replaces Robert H. Benmosche, who has retired. In addition, Philip Fasano, who will be joining AIG in October, will take on the newly created role of executive vice-president and chief information officer (CIO).

JP Girard has been appointed leader for the Prairie provinces for Morneau Shepell. He was previously vice-president, international and Atlantic, for the firm’s employee support solutions business.

Bill Gross has joined Janus Capital Group. He will manage a recently launched Janus Global Unconstrained Bond Fund and related strategies. Gross was a founder, managing director and CIO of Pacific Investment Management Company (PIMCO), where he worked for 43 years.

Tim Herbinson has joined ENCON Group as vice-president, national sales leader in the company’s group and retiree benefits division. He was previously a senior account executive at Green Shield Canada.

Chris Hodgson, group head of Scotiabank’s global wealth and insurance division, has decided to retire ahead of a realignment of business units scheduled for later this year.

Manulife Asset Management has named Allan Hutton as managing director, business development, for Ontario. Most recently, he was vice-president, institutional investment services, with Hillsdale Investment Management.

PIMCO has elected Daniel Ivascyn to serve as group CIO. He succeeds Bill Gross, who has left the firm. In addition, the company appointed Andrew Balls as CIO, global; Mark Kiesel as CIO, global credit; Virginie Maisonneuve as CIO, equities; Scott Mather as CIO, U.S. core strategies; and Mihir Worah as CIO, real return and asset allocation.

Hyewon Kong has joined AGF Investments as an associate portfolio manager. Previously, she was a senior analyst with WHEB Asset Management in the United Kingdom.

The Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) has appointed Andrew J. Kriegler (above) as president and CEO. He will take on the role beginning Nov. 1, 2014, and will also become a member of the IIROC board of directors at that time.

Ed Martin has been appointed to the board of directors of Medavie Inc. He’s s the CEO of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Nalcor Energy, a provincial Crown corporation.

The board of the Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund has appointed Rod Matheson as CEO. He will take on the role effective Nov. 17, 2014, and succeed Emilian Groch. Matheson has been with the Government of Alberta in various capacities for more than 30 years.

Ken Miner, vice-chair, fixed income, with TD Asset Management (TDAM), has taken on a new leadership role as strategic advisor for TDAM USA Inc. Robert Pemberton, managing director and head of fixed income, will continue to lead the fixed income team in Canada and will also assume responsibility for the U.S. fixed income portfolio management team.

Aston Hill Financial has appointed Neil Murdoch as chief operating officer of Aston Hill and president of Aston Hill Asset Management Inc. He joined the company in August 2013 and has more than 25 years’ experience in the financial services and investment management industries.

Michael Roberge, MFS president and CIO, will be promoted to co-CEO, effective Jan. 1, 2015. He will share management responsibilities with Robert Manning, MFS chairman and CEO since 2004. Roberge will also continue to serve as CIO.

Effective Nov. 1, 2014, Darryl White, head of global investment and corporate banking at BMO Financial Group, will be the group head of BMO Capital Markets. And Patrick Cronin, head of trading products, will be chief operating officer. These appointments coincide with the upcoming retirements of Tom Milroy as group head and CEO, and Eric Tripp as president.

And CIBC has announced a new executive leadership team: David Williamson has been named senior executive vice-president and group head, retail and business banking; Steve Geist has been appointed senior executive vice-president and group head, wealth management; Harry Culham has been named managing director and group co-head, wholesale banking; Geoff Belsher has been appointed managing director and group co-head, wholesale banking; Kevin Glass has been named senior executive vice-president and chief financial officer; Mike Capatides has been appointed senior executive vice-president, chief administrative officer and general counsel; Laura Dottori-Attanasio has been named senior executive vice-president and chief risk officer; and Kevin Patterson has been appointed senior executive vice-president, technology and operations. The bank also announced that two executives, Richard Nesbitt and Tom Woods, would be retiring.
