People Watch: On the move in March

Peter Berczi has joined Benecaid Health Benefit Solutions as its new CEO. He joined after nine years as a senior executive at Rogers Communications (the parent company of Benefits Canada). Prior to that, he was CEO of InsLogic, an Onex-controlled private label direct property and casualty brokerage acquired by Capital One in 2005.

Employee Financial Well-Being has appointed Christopher Cartwright as president. He has previously worked for the Financial Education Institute of Canada and Standard Life Assurance Company of Canada.

Ian Cullwick has joined Mercer’s Ottawa office as a partner in its talent business. He has more than 20 years of experience at an international consulting firm specializing in human capital and total rewards, and most recently he served as vice-president of leadership/human resources research and advisory services at The Conference Board of Canada.

The C.D. Howe Institute has appointed Leo de Bever as a senior fellow of the institute and a member of its national council. He was most recently CEO of Alberta Investment Management Corporation. de Bever started his career at the Bank of Canada, and has worked with eight public and private organizations in four countries, including Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan and Manulife Financial.

Christopher J. DeSantis has joined Hillsdale Investment Management Inc. as vice-president, institutional investment services. He has more than 23 years of experience in the investment industry.

PIMCO has hired David Hammer as an executive vice-president and portfolio manager for municipal bond portfolio management. He first joined PIMCO in 2012 as a senior vice-president and left in 2014 to join Morgan Stanley.

As part of a recent closed transaction in which Ceridian acquired most of the assets of RelatedMatters, Inc., the two co-founders of the startup have joined the Ceridian senior executive team. Jon Harris joins Ceridian as senior vice-president, RelatedMatters. And Ted Malley joins Ceridian as senior vice-president, product evangelism.

Taeyong Lee, executive chairman of Horizons ETFs, along with Steven Hawkins, chief investment officer of Horizons ETFs, have been appointed co-CEOs of Horizons ETFs. They’ve also been appointed co-CEOs of AlphaPro Management Inc., which serves as the manager and trustee for certain of the exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the Horizons ETFs family.

Michelle Loder has joined Morneau Shepell as a partner in its DC solutions business. Her 23-year career includes 19 years of experience with Towers Watson and Mercer Investment Consulting. She also worked at Coopers & Lybrand and McCay Duff.

Carl Mustos is the new president of IA Clarington Investments. He’s been with the company for almost eight years as senior vice-president and national sales manager. Prior to joining IA Clarington, Mustos held senior sales positions at Mackenzie Financial and Global Strategy Financial.

Ronald O’Hanley is the new president and CEO of State Street Global Advisors. He has nearly 30 years of experience in leadership roles within the industry and most recently served as president of Asset Management & Corporate Services for Fidelity Investments.

Neil Petroff (pictured above), executive vice-president and chief investment officer of Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, is retiring, effective June 1. An internal and external search will be undertaken for a successor.

Morgan Stanley has named Jonathan Pruzan as its new chief financial officer. He replaces Ruth Porat, who will take on the same role at Google.

Manulife has appointed Dr. Laureen Rance as its first-ever director of pharmaceutical relations. She has more than 20 years of experience working in healthcare. Rance began her career as a staff pharmacist in retail and hospital settings. Then, she worked as a reimbursement strategist and in pharmacy benefits management.

David Scandiffio is the new president and CEO of CIBC Asset Management. He has more than 20 years of asset management experience, and was most recently president of IA Clarington Funds.

Medgate Inc. has appointed Brad Totten to director of sales, responsible for client relationships. He has more than 15 years of strategic sales and management experience.
