Social media company Pinterest is introducing new benefits to support employees with the financial costs of adoption and surrogacy.
As of July 1, the company will reimburse employees going through the adoption process with up to US$5,000 in net benefits. Those working with a surrogate can receive reimbursement up to US$20,000 in net benefits, covering costs associated with everything from travel to agency and legal fees and other related expenses.

The company’s human resources team introduced the new benefits after hearing an employee’s story, wrote Candice Morgan, head of inclusion and diversity at Pinterest in San Francisco, in a blog post.
“Our people team often speaks with employees to learn more about how we should expand our benefits, and we recently spoke with a colleague who’s been looking into surrogacy with his husband,” she wrote. “The high costs associated with surrogacy were raised, and we began looking into how we could help him, and others in similar situations, ease the financial burden.”
The new benefits are in addition to Pinterest’s current offering of 16 weeks of parental leave for all parents and fertility benefits up to US$20,000.

“We look forward to continuing to expand the benefits and growing our culture we offer so that all employees and their families feel represented and supported,” Morgan added.
