The Great-West Life Assurance Co. is covering continuous glucose monitoring devices for eligible plan members beginning Aug. 1, 2018.
The devices include a reader, wearable sensors and a transmitter that sends measurements of glucose levels to a smart device every five minutes. Measuring by day and at night, the device helps avoid glucose spikes and drops and provides alerts when levels are irregular.

To be eligible for coverage, individuals must belong to a plan that currently includes continuous glucose monitors and related transmitters and sensors. As well, they have to use insulin to manage their blood sugar or glucose.
“As technologies continue to advance patient care, we’re pleased to make coverage for these devices more accessible to help Canadians improve their financial, physical and mental well-being,” said Brad Fedorchuk, senior vice-president of group customer experience and marketing at Great-West Life, in a news release.
The addition follows Great-West Life’s coverage of flash glucose monitors beginning April 1, 2018. The device, which is for those aged 18 or older who have managed their diabetes for at least two years, also uses a reader and sensors to measure glucose levels and provides results when prompted.
