The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board’s chair, Gail Cook-Bennett, is slated to become the chair of Manulife’s board of directors later this year, according to the company’s proxy circular.

It is anticipated that subject to her re-election at the insurance company’s 2008 annual meeting, she will be appointed chair of the board after her existing chair commitments at the CPPIB end later this year.

Cook-Bennett has been a director on Manulife’s board for 30 years and vice-chair since last December.

The current chair, Arthur Sawchuk, is leaving because he has reached the mandatory retirement age. The board has waived the mandatory retirement age policy and he will stay on as chair until Cook-Bennett’s commitments at the CPPIB end.
