Institutional investors are more confident this month, according to the State Street Investor Confidence Index.

Global investor confidence rose 4.8 points to 77.4 from 72.6 in February.

Amongst North American investors, confidence rose 5.4 points to 83.5 and risk appetite in other regions complemented this, with European investor confidence rising to 88.6 from 84.0 and Asian investor confidence rising to 88.0 from 85.2.

“This month’s increase, though moderate, was relatively broad-based, as institutional investors in North America, Europe and Asia increased their allocations to equities somewhat,” says State Street Associates director Paul O’Connell. “The allocations were discriminating, though, with financial and discretionary stocks favoured over technology and materials.”

The index measures investor confidence on a quantitative basis, analyzing actual buying and selling patterns of institutional investors. The more institutional investors are willing to devote to equities in their portfolio, the greater their confidence.
