Donald Stewart, chief executive officer of Sun Life Financial, has been named International Executive of the Year by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Canada’s largest business association.

The International Executive of the Year Award was established to showcase Canadian business achievements by recognizing an executive whose leadership has fostered the company’s strong and competitive presence in global markets.

The award was presented to Stewart at a formal evening event in Toronto on Nov. 27, 2007, which included videotaped congratulations from Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, as well as a letter from Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Past recipients of the award include Tony Comper, Wallace McCain, Charles Baillie, Peter Godsoe and Laurent Beaudoin, among others.

Sun Life Financial is a leading international financial services organization, with assets under management of more than CDN $427 billion. Stewart stresses that Sun Life’s success is the result of the hard work and achievements of many individuals. “Since our first foreign excursion, in 1880, our greatest strength has always been our people, including employees, advisors and business partners,” he says, in a recent Chamber of Commerce press release.
