Most American institutional investment plan sponsors experienced double-digit returns last year, according to data in the Northern Trust Universe.

Foundation and endowment plans led the way with a yearly median return of 14.3% while corporate and public fund plans posted median returns of 13.7% and 13.5% for the year, respectively.

“Plans benefited from their large U.S. equity allocations,” says Joe Nardulli, product manager, Northern Trust investment risk & analytical services. “The top returning plans separated themselves by style selection in U.S. equity, with larger allocations to value strategies, relative to their peers.”

The Northern Trust Universe represents the performance results of more than 300 large institutional investment plans, with a combined asset value of approximately US$640 billion.
