A new Toronto-based hedge fund has scored a win with an investment from the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS)—the largest pension money manager in the U.S. CalPERS has invested $100 million in seed money with Breton Hill Capital, a global macro hedge fund with investments in equities, currencies and commodity and financial futures.
The investment is CalPERS first seed investment with a hedge fund manager. The pension fund also has approximately $500 million invested with customized funds of hedge funds focusing on emerging managers.
CalPERS has approximately $224 billion in market assets and administers retirement benefits for 1.3 million members.
