The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan is appointing Steve McGirr as its new chair beginning January 2019.
McGirr will replace Jean Turmel, the current chair, whose term expires at the end of the year. Serving as a board member since 2015, McGirr is currently chair of the governance committee, vice-chair of the investment committee and a member of the human resources and compensation committee.
Prior to these roles, McGirr was senior executive vice-president and chief risk officer of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce until 2007, and president of CIBC World Markets.

“Mr. McGirr’s breadth and depth of experience make him very well suited for this role,” said Diane Dewing, president of the Ontario Teachers’ Federation, in a press release. “We are delighted he has taken this position on behalf of Ontario’s teachers.”
