A Windsor, Ont., woman has pleaded guilty to one count of fraud of more than $5,000 for defrauding the federal government by collecting Canada Pension Plan and old age security benefits over 14 years.
The RCMP says she was claiming the funds for 14 years after her husband passed away.
She was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $151,310 to the Receiver General of Canada and received a 12-month conditional sentence order and 12-month probation.
The 78-year-old woman, whose name was not released, had been the subject of a two-year investigation by the RCMP.
“The RCMP remains committed to investigating these types of frauds, which adversely affect the government’s financial support network,” says Inspector Serge Cote, officer in charge of the Windsor detachment. “The Canadian public contributes to these government programs and trusts that they will be there in their retirement years.”
