Canadians prioritizing salary, benefits in job search: survey

While 78 per cent of respondents agreed salary is their top reason for accepting one job offer over another, 49 per cent said benefits is also a priority, according to a new survey by Robert Half Canada Inc.

The survey, which polled 400 Canadian workers, also found 39 per cent indicated the position’s responsibilities plays a role, followed by the commute (37 per cent) and the job’s advancement potential (28 per cent).

“While competitive salary and benefits packages remain crucial, promoting what makes their company a great place to work needs to be an ongoing focus for hiring managers hoping to tip the scales in their favour,”said David King, senior district president for Robert Half, in a press release.

“Applicants are moving quickly to decide between offers, and organizations with a reputation for supporting their staff’s individual needs and professional goals will stand out for their commitment to the satisfaction and success of their employees.”

Almost half (49 per cent) of respondents said they received two or more simultaneous offers when applying for a job. The survey also found 71 per cent of candidates took two days or less to accept a position, indicating candidates rarely prefer to wait once they start receiving offers.

“Chances are one manager’s ideal candidate is someone else’s as well, which is why it’s crucial that businesses put their best foot forward and act quickly to successfully land the talent they need,” said King.
