Financial literacy pays off—literally

Brandes Investment Partners & Co. (Brandes Canada) has announced 10 winners for its scholarship program launched earlier this year.

The program, which was specifically developed to address recommendations from the federal Task Force on Financial Literacy, received more than 3,500 applicants from May 23 to July 20. It was open to Canadians between the ages of 16 and 22.

Each applicant had to submit a 250-word essay summarizing insights gained from a custom financial profile, which was generated by taking a quiz. The requirements tested the applications knowledge and sought their fundamental attitudes and behaviours toward money.

The winners—five youth from Ontario, two each from Alberta and British Columbia and one from Nova Scotia—will each receive $1,000. An independent panel of judges of Canadian financial experts selected the winners.

Carol Lynde, president and chief operating officer of Brandes Canada, was pleased with the overwhelming response to the program and is looking forward to it becoming an annual event. “The entries from Canadian youth are an inspiration for financial learning. Supporting and introducing programs that foster large-scale financial literacy is a priority for Brandes that we are deeply committed to.”
