Goldman Sachs has created its first infrastructure fund, GS Infrastructure Partners, with more than US$6.5 billion in committed capital.

The investment bank has committed about $750 million of the fund’s total capital. Other institutional investors include pension funds, insurance companies and banks.

GS Infrastructure Partners will seek investments in traditional infrastructure sectors including transport infrastructure, such as toll roads, airports and ports as well as regulated gas, water and electrical utilities.

The primary investment opportunities are expected to be in North America and Europe. The fund has already committed to recent investments, including Associated British Ports and Kinder Morgan.
