Canadian HR managers holding a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation typically have higher income and receive more promotions than their peers who don’t have the certification, a new report reveals.
The annual salaries of HR managers who are CHRPs are 13% higher than those of their non-certified colleagues, according to a report called Fuel for HR Careers, conducted by the Human Resources Professionals Association. In industries such as utilities, finance, mining, quarrying and extraction of oil and gas, the annual pay was more than 50% higher with a CHRP.
“These report findings are consistent with our research showing there are only a few ways to positively impact pay for white-collar jobs—certifications being one of them,” says Katie Bardaro, lead economist at PayScale, an American cloud compensation and data software company, which co-authored the report.
The study also reveals that CHRPs advance to senior roles more quickly. Sixty-five percent of HR assistants with the CHRP received a promotion within five years, compared with only 33% of those without.
Additionally, from 2012 to 2013, job postings requiring a CHRP increased from 67% to 70%. This is a significant increase from 2007, when the figure stood at 36%.
The study is based on data from 2012 and 2013. It covers 12 industries and 11 metropolitan areas in Canada.
