Recessionary job cuts appear to be a thing of the past, at least in the minds of Canadian HR professionals. The biggest concern they have now is training and continuing education for the staff they have, according to a survey by OfficeTeam, a staffing service specializing in the temporary placement of highly skilled office and administrative support professionals.

Forty-one percent said that training and development topped their list of priorities, while 27% said recruiting new staff was their primary concern. Retaining top-performing employees ranked third, at 23%.

“Job security is on everyone’s minds, and having up-to-date skills is the key to staying relevant and marketable,” says Robert Hosking, executive director of OfficeTeam. “By providing training opportunities, companies demonstrate they’re committed to their employees’ long-term career growth, and this can help with their retention efforts.

“Training programs boost job satisfaction for employees by enabling them to build new skills and take on more challenging roles.”
