People Watch: On the move in December

Here’s a review of people on the move in December.

Rob Bauer has been appointed to a five-year term as executive director of the Rotman International Centre for Pension Management (ICPM). In May, he was appointed to the position but no term was announced. Bauer has been involved with the centre since its inception in 2005. And Donald Raymond, an adjunct professor at the Rotman School, has been named as special advisor to the dean and chair emeritus of Rotman ICPM. He is currently managing partner and chief investment officer of Alignvest Management Corp.

Stephen P. Beernaert has joined the Brandon office of Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP. His areas of focus are labour and employment law, commercial litigation, construction law, oil and gas law, municipal law and agribusiness. He previously worked at Bennett Jones.

Kenneth Cooke has joined Avalon Actuarial, a division of Willis Canada, as senior vice-president of its human capital practice. He was most recently with Towers Watson and has 25 years of experience in the consulting industry.

Roy Gori has been appointed president and CEO of Manulife Asia, effective March 1, 2015. He joins from Citi, where he was most recently head of consumer banking, North Asia and Australia, and regional head of retail banking, Asia-Pacific.

Charles Guay (above) will become president and CEO of Manulife Quebec and executive vice-president, institutional markets, at Manulife Canada once the acquisition of the Canadian-based operations of Standard Life closes, which is expected sometime in the first quarter of 2015. He has been president and CEO of Standard Life Canada since January 2012. Before joining Standard Life, Guay held several executive positions with National Bank of Canada.

Sara Grootwassink Lewis has been appointed to Sun Life Financial’s board of directors. She has more than two decades of corporate executive and capital markets experience.

Garry MacNicholas, currently executive vice-president, actuarial and risk, will become executive vice-president and CFO of Great-West Lifeco effective March 31, 2015. He replaces William W. Lovatt, who’s been with the company for 35 years, including the last 17 years as CFO.

The board of trustees of OPTrust has chosen Hugh O’Reilly as president and CEO of the organization. He previously led the pension benefits and insolvency practice group at Cavalluzzo Shilton McIntyre Cornish LLP, a firm he joined after a successful career on the management side as a partner at Torys LLP.

State Street has appointed Michael (Mike) F. Rogers to president and chief operating officer. He joined State Street in 2007 following its acquisition of Investors Financial, where he served as president for six years.

The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan has appointed Jo Taylor as managing director for Europe, Middle East and Africa and head of the London office. He will guide all advisory relationships within the region and becomes a member of Teachers’ investment committee. Also, the pension fund has promoted Stephen McLennan to vice-president, natural resources. He joined Teachers’ in 2003 and was most recently director, natural resources. And there are two members of Teachers’ board of directors: John Murray, who has more than 35 years’ experience as a global macroeconomist, and Bill Chinery, who has more than 30 years of experience in investment management.

RBC Global Asset Management has appointed Damon Williams and Alex Khein as co-CEOs effective May 1, 2015. Williams joined Phillips, Hager & North Investment Management in 2005; the company was acquired by RBC in 2008. And Khein joined BlueBay Asset Management in 2004 and was appointed chief operating officer in 2005. BlueBay was acquired by RBC in 2010. Khein will remain as partner and CEO of BlueBay, a position he has held since Jan. 1, 2014. Also effective May 1, 2015, John Montalbano, CEO of RBC Global Asset Management, will assume a new role as vice-chairman of RBC Wealth Management.

Laurentian Bank has appointed Susan Wolburgh Jenah to the board of directors. She was previously president and CEO of the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada from 2008 to 2014.
