Google is the best place to work in the world, according to the Great Place to Work Institute’s 2016 list of the top 25 multinational workplaces.
Just four per cent of this year’s list are based in Canada, compared to seven per cent in Britain, six per cent in Mexico and five percent in the United States. The only company headquartered in Canada that made the list is Scotiabank, which ranked 18th.

The top companies scored highly on lack of discrimination, physical safety, a friendly and welcoming environment, honest management and employee pride in company accomplishments. The largest point difference between winners’ and non-winners’ scores were in terms of recognition, fair promotions, work-life balance and fair pay.
The institute has seen statistically significant correlation between top employers and performance metrics such as revenue growth, profitability, employee retention and customer satisfaction, says Ron Grey, an organizational psychologist and senior vice-president at Great Place to Work Canada.
“We find that organizations that build great workplaces tend to have very strong cultures in which employees have high levels of engagement and commitment,” he says.
