The Alberta Investment Management Corp. is appointing James Barber as executive vice-president of public equities, effective July 14.
He joins the AIMCo from AMP Investment Partners, where he was co-founder and managing partner. Previously, Barber served as chief investment officer of equities at Russell Investments and held roles at SEI Investments Co. in the U.K. and U.S. and KPMG in South Africa.

In an emailed statement to Benefits Canada, the AIMCo said the position has been vacant since mid-2020. It was previously held by Peter Pontikes. “In recognition of the importance of this role, AIMCo undertook a comprehensive, global search to identify the most suitable candidate for the position to ensure the right mix of client orientation and technical acumen. Barber is an accomplished finance executive who is well prepared to take on the role today and to lead the team into the future to best serve AIMCo’s clients.”
