Ontario’s finance minister has asked the rest of Canada “to collaborate on options to improve supplementary retirement income for workers.”
In a letter that was sent Wednesday to his provincial and territorial counterparts, Charles Sousa said he would welcome their involvement in developing a retirement solution so that all workers can benefit as well.
“This is not an Ontario-only problem, nor should it be an Ontario-only solution,” he wrote.
Last week, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne said details of a provincial pension plan would be released in the spring.
The province has created a Technical Advisory Group on Retirement Security made up of six pension experts to help advise it on the creation of a provincial pension. Alongside former prime minister Paul Martin, the group will advise the government on how to improve the retirement income system, including an Ontario-based alternative to a Canada Pension Plan enhancement.
