Inflation is a major risk for plan sponsors in Canada according to our expert panel that I interviewed at this year’s Investment Innovation Conference in Bermuda. With a “slow-burning default” underway in Europe and the UK economist Andrew Spence points out that plan sponsors must take inflation very seriously in the coming months and years. But according to plan sponsors Josephine Marks and Bruce Grantier, it’s difficult for all but the biggest plans in Canada to address the risk of inflation – or even deflation. Says Grantier, while Canada’s big public plans are staffed up to deal with inflation busters like private equity and alternatives, these tools are much harder to most DB plans to access.
